GINGER BREAD MEN!!!

No, we don't make ginger bread men cookies, but I love them and in honor of the #holidayseason and the new #Starwars film #Rogueone I'm writing about them. There are two kinds, the ones that have a real spicy flavor, I mean you can taste the ginger, and the other ones that are bland and barely resemble the flavor of ginger, I love the spicy ones for God's sake it the holidays! Let There Be Spice! I thought the ones above were very creative and different and that's why I chose to write about them. Gee, I'm making myself hungry, I think I'll stop in #Wholefoods and buy one. Lol! I think it's also time for me to roll out my pumpkin spiced bourbon cake,

SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO MAKE A CHANGE!

I’m not really good with change and I do understand that it’s necessary to keep up with the times and just to infuse some life into different situations, as the expression goes “Everything Must Change!” SO, we are redoing the Snooky’s website, of course I’m having trepidations but I’m diving head on. I trust you Janie, I trust you.

You can have a look at the progress of the site at the link below, let us know what you think.

PACMAN!!!

I use to play #Pacman ALL THE TIME back in the day and be pretty good at it too! It was a simple game but one that you got hooked on much like the games today. The cake above was requested by a husband for this wife who was... you guessed it, having a baby, it's a baby shower cake, according to him his wife is a fanatic about Pacman and is quite good at it too. We made a #redvelvet cake which was frosted and filled with cream cheese buttercream and then covered in fondant. My original thought was to make the bottom tier black with the Pacman grid and ghosts and cherries you know like the way the games graphics look, but then thought keeping it in the tradition of a baby shower theme so pale colors were used. Behold, the Pacman baby shower cake above!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

#TheOrangeMan, #SyracuseUniversity's mascot and the mascot of my alma mater, "Go SU!!!
At every game the Orange Man would be there to support the team and get the Home Crowd rowd up! I loved seeing him walk and run through the crowds of people, for Halloween I would love to have a costume like his, not the Orangeman per se, but I would love to be a walking something, like a carton of milk, or a pack of cigarettes with two or three cigarettes popping out of the top. Year after year I imagine myself as something and year after year I fail to make the costume, it takes a lot of work and planning, it'll happen some day, know it! Anyway, the cake above was made for a SU grad's husband who also went to #SyaracuseUniversity. "We are...SU!!! Loved that school, great memories.

My Favorite cake.

I love love love this cake, I think because it's simplistic in design and because I love pigs, if I didn't live in NYC I would have a pig and one of those miniature horses too, you know like the one on the #Amazon commercial where the little guy isn't accepted by the other horses so the owner buys a low entry door for him to come inside to be with her for company. Lol! Back to the cake. Made for little Chloe who we are actually making another cake for this week, it's a two-tiered cake made out of chocolate and covered in fondant.  This week's cake is a Lego's Friends cake and it's a playground scene with the five girls on it. Happy Birthday Choe!

Coors Light!

Above is a #Coorslight bottle cake made for ten people, I know, small right? It's always harder to get details in for smaller cakes, think about small artifacts from a distant time that are handmade. Here in NYC at the #MetropolitanMuseumofArt there are rosary beads made during the medieval times that have intricate scenes carved out of them, I'm always in awe of them but more importantly wonder how they could have been made. Our cake about was hand carved and then frosted with a buttercream which was covered by fondant. Many times with fondant we make cut outs of images, letters, etc..but this time we hand pipped the Coor Light on since the cake was so small.

A Simple Little Cake!

Sometimes in life it's the simple things that give us the most pleasure, running in the rain in the summer when it's hot, connecting with someone well appreciated from your past, and whatever imaginable for you. The cake above is one of our simpler masterpieces, decorated in buttercream alone, and not fondant as usual, it conveys a pleasurable scene of dolphins, the friendly mammals of the waters. Little Anwen wanted a dolphin jumping out of the water with a smile on its face with a sunset in the background and that's what we created for her. The cake was all chocolate with chocolate buttercream and we added vanilla buttercream on top hand piped and then manipulated with a palette knife to depict the colors of the water and sky.

Hamilton

Hamilton, Hamilton, Hamilton!  I am dying to see the #Broadwayshow #Hamilton, tickets cost upwards of $500 I've been told, a little too steep for my pockets. I do believe in asking the universe what you want and so far I've had three encounters about the play, my mom mentioned last Thanksgiving that she really want to see it, a gym member at my gym excitedly told me she's going with her daughter to see the play, and lastly the cake above which was ordered by a man who's wife saw the show and loved it so much so that he had us make the cake above replacing Hamilton with Helene, how thoughtful! A #redvelvetcake frosted with cream cheese and then covered in fondant was requested and the rest as you know if you've seen or #googled the playbill replicates the show's logo. Hamilton, Hamilton, Hamilton I can see my future in the audience. Lol!

Doctor Who and His Tardis

Don't we all wish we had a #Tardis or some other time travel machine, heck I would transport myself back just three years prior and take a vacation somewhere in Central or South America before Zika existed, Zika is apparently really scary to me. Lands undiscovered and times that I think I would fit into would all be at my access, I'm sure there are some #backtoschool kids who would love to just relive their summer again. This being my second time making a Tardis, the first cake was a #3Dcake, it's an earlier blog post, but the cake above was made to be only two-dimensional. Made out of chocolate cake and filled with a raspberry preserve filling and then frosted with a vanilla buttercream. All of the covering and detail work is done in fondant. Call us to order one 212 665-0990.

Photos of Our Cakes at Snooky's

Sometimes writing something about what we do at Snooky's is the most complicated thing to get done. There are good ideas and not so good ideas about what to post, and sometimes it's getting the right photo shot of a cake that can deter the whole post. I have had on many occasions in trying to get a cake finished by a certain time taken really bad pictures of a cake, also there are times when rushing we forget to get a picture and ask the client to send one but in the 15 plus years I've been doing cakes I've never had a picture sent to me, sorry just one the one below.

Two guys who had their birthday celebrated together and they are both replicated on the cake, a space shuttle. Below is a better picture of the cake.

And clearly we did get a picture of it before it was delivered, but trust me when I say that it rarely happens we get a picture from a client. Not complaining, just sharing.

Happy Summer Everyone!!!

CHANEL

When I think of fashion, I think of #Chanel it's iconic when it comes to #fashionandBeauty. My first love affair as a sophomore in college at #SyracuseUniversity with a lipstick was by Chanel, the brand set the precedent for #lipsticks to come. The #ladieswholunch bring to mind the #Chaneljacket that is oh so recognized, and the quilted handbags make me think of the young ladies who adorn them with gowns, dresses, and even jeans.  The cake above embodies the Chanel brand in that it incorporates the quilting design, pearls, the double c and an elegant shoe on top. I hope one day to be a lady who lunches, and maybe I'll be one who wears one of those beautiful jackets.

When Last Minute Orders Are complicated.

I have found that there are few last minute orders that are really complicated that we turn down, many of them for celebrities, they seem to always need a cake for a talent the next day, but there are times we take on the challenge especially when they are unique. Take for example the cake above, it was ordered by a realty firm for a client they were trying to win an account from, it was to be three buildings that replicated the actual buildings done by a construction company, the realty agency wanted exclusive rights to rent or sell the units hence the courting with the cake. We only had two and a half days to make this cake and it was really a lot of work, I've found sometimes it's best just to not think about the task and just plow through it, this is how we got through finishing this cake on time. By the way, we never like turning down a cake for a celebrity but frankly a lot of times it just impossible to do.

Males and Sports!

Boy, when #men and #boys are into #sports they seem to go all the way. Take the cake above, the wife of the birthday boy insisted that all of his favorite sports teams be incorporated into the cake somehow, If she could she would have made separate stadiums for them all so we put #TheRangers, #TheKnicks, and the on banners and plaques, the #TomFord plaque was put in because the birthday boy also loved the clothing line. Good forbid all of the teams have to play on the same day what would that look like? That would never happen but you never know. The cake was made out of chocolate and filled with chocolate and frosted in vanilla buttercream and then covered in fondant.

When A Girl Just Wants To Be A Girl!

Rainbows, hearts, flowers, and puppy tails all the things that most girls love is what this cake incorporated. The colors are a bit washed out in the photo because they were nice and bright (it might be time for a new camera) encompassing blue, pink, purple, green, and yellow. Little Tova was turning five and boy did her eyes light up with joy when she saw her cake and gladly so since it was pouring rain and her party that was to be outdoors now was an indoor party at her home. Happy Birthday Tova!!!

Golden Cupcakes for the Class of 2016 at Columbia University!

May and June are graduation season and as we get more and more orders for graduation themed cakes such as caps, stacks of law books, the adaptation of #Dr.Seuss'sThePlacesYouWillGo, and other graduation theme suggestions, we reflect on what our dreams were when we first entered the work place. I wanted to open a restaurant, and I did which is actually how I got into the cake business, it's was a spin-off from my restaurant which was also called Snooky's located here in NYC in Central Harlem, boy was that a lot of work I literally had no life being an owner and manager of a restaurant. Anyway we push on here and make another graduation cake for a young person starting their life in the workforce but the cupcakes above were easy peezy!

To The Graduating Class of 2016!

Be bold, be fearless and most of all, be you! This cake was made for some MSA Columbia University seniors this past weekend. In a world where celebrities are put on pedastules and an education almost seems absolete in our society to achieving success it's refreshing and reassuring that career choices other than ones that are in the film or TV or should I say in the entertainment industry are still desirable to some.

Made with chocolate cake and filled with fresh strawberries and cream and then frosted with vanilla buttercream and covered with a gold fondant, #Columbiauniversity colors are white and light blue so we made the cap in the school's blue and the design around the cake in white and then added flowers in the same colors. Call us to order one for your school of choice!

Get in Shape for Summer.

It's that time of year again, time to get into shape if you haven't maintained it. All spring and summer long I see #Soulcycle tee shirts, hoodies, and locations around the city it must be the IT place for spin classes. Anyway, this cake was made for a SoulCycle enthusiast and we thought it was perfect for this time of the year when we are trying to get in shape or take our workout routine to the next level. Made out of fondant and gumpaste which is covering a lemon cake with passion fruit buttercream.

Minny Mouse Cake

#Minnymousecake I loved Minnie Mouse as a kid, as a matter of fact when we went to #Disneyworld I would only take pictures with Minnie and not Mickey Mouse, it's really strange that I remember that, I also remember getting a riffle that shot round cork bullets I think it had something to do with the #SwissRobinsonfamily. Anyway,  I was delighted to make this cake which we made with our golden yellow cake that was then filled and frosted with chocolate buttercream and then covered and decorated with fondant. And by the way we will make #MickeyMouse if you prefer.

Here's To The Blue and White of NYC!

We made a simple police badge cake for an officer who became Sargent, ordered by his girlfriend who I suspiciously believe is an opera singer who was performing the same night of the cake's presentation. Decorated all in #buttercream, the badge was done with a white chocolate which we then painted silver to look like a real #nypdpolicebadge. We do not get many requests at Snooky's Custom Cakes to do cakes made entirely of buttercream so when we get them I make sure to post them.

TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME!

It's baseball time folks! Damien (my client), love that name,  wanted a soft ball theme cake for his daughter's birthday, who also happens to be on a softball league so we made this cake for her. Actually the cake that the client took home looked different in that the ball was yellow with red stitching, when Damien came to pick up the cake he noticed the ball wasn't the right color so we changed it quickly while he waited but I didn't get a picture of it. Another save for team Snooky's!

It was the 80's and I was there!

I said a hip hop,
Hippie to the hippie,
The hip, hip a hop, and you don't stop, a rock it
To the bang bang boogie, say, up jump the boogie,
To the rhythm of the boogie, the beat.

I was there! My first boyfriend was a graffiti artist as a matter of fact one of the top artists in the city and to this day is still in the graffiti scene and is considered a legend. Here's to you #skeme! #Pacman was the game of choice, we listened to #cassettetapes on #boomboxes to hear our favorite songs, and boys in the hood who were wore chunky gold chains to accessorize their outfits. Welcome to #HipHop, welcome to the 80's!!!

Boom Box Cake with gold chain and pac man theme on first tier.

The Cube Cake with Le Cobusier's The Modulor

Making a cube out of cake has to be one of the most difficult cakes to make. It takes a ruler, a protector, a T square, a compass, and everything else you learned to use in geometry. Oh, you don't remember geometry? Didn't think cake designers used it? Well we do, and other math applications as well! Back to the cake, this is probably the second cube cake I've made the first being a #Rubik'scube, the cake above was a much better attempt in that the sides came out really straight and that's because I used fondant panels to attach the to the cake instead of the standard draping the fondant over the cake method. Made for an architect, The Modulor is the proportioning system developed by Le Corbusier who believed these proportions to be evident in the human body. The purpose of the Modulor was to "maintain the human scale everywhere". The entire building "Unite d'" was based on the Modulor proportioning system. A little bit of art history for the day.

#EloiseatthePlazacake, this client actually took two cakes we made in the past and combined them, the figurine on the cake was an addition and if you look through some of my posts you'll see the two teirred cake with the Eloise figurine. The cake was completely edible made with fondant except for Eloise which was done in modeling chocolate, yummy, I kept tasting it, note to self stay out of the modeling chocolate!!!

The #Chanelbag, always in style, season after season, and not just the real thing but also when it's made into a cake, I wonder if #CocoChanel knew that her designs would become so iconic. First Cake of the New Year!

For #thefirstofthenewyear we were requested to make an #EloiseatthePlaza cake with a #3Dfigurine on top out of #modelingchocolate, first time making the chocolate and first time working with it, I think we did a great job considering. We made Eloise looking as though she was about to climb off the cake to show off her rambuntcious side as is depicted by her slightly turned torso. I would definitely use modeling chocolate again when making a figurine because it holds much better than fondant and it tastes really really good! Cake was a yellow cake filled and frosted with chocolate buttercream and then covered in #chocolatefondant.
