The Making Of A Mask For A Cake

Last week I had a client who wanted a mask as a cake, budget wise making the whole cake into mask wasn't doable but with a little thinking and creativity we made a sheet cake that was adorned with a mask fit for a woman turning 40 hence the inscription "Forty and Fabulous!" So we started with a frosted sheet cake and then started making the crown. Things need for the crown included:

Candy melts

disposable piping bag

Traceable image for the mask.

Yellow and black buttercream
yellow food coloring
gold spay edible paint
a number 2 and 31 piping tips
wax paper
cake board

Instructions:

Melt the candy melts in a bowl on medium heat in a microwave checking in 3 minute intervals for a smooth consistency. Once melted stir in yellow food coloring a little at a time to get a nice bright yellow, spoon the mixture into a piping bag and cut the tip of the bag (not too wide). Place your traceable image on a movable surface i.e. cake board and place a piece of wax paper on top of it. Then with your filled piping bag trace the lines that you see through the wax paper.

Let the image harden completely. Now mix yellow into your buttercream and with another piping bag cut the tip large enough so the the #1 piping tip can nestle in it, fill bag with yellow buttercream.
Once the image has hardened turn it over and place it on your cake board and peel the wax paper off. Now with your piping bag filled with yellow buttercream add lines for details that are in the traceable image.

Once you have achieved your desired detailing set in the refrigerator to harden buttercream for 10 minutes. When done using your stray gold paint spray the mask with even quick stokes and cover evenly then let set to dry about 5 minutes.

Carefully remove the mask from the cake board and place it on your cake (we centered it), then with a pipping bag with the #31 tip filled with black buttercream pipe strokes from the top of the mask spraying outwards to get the desired look you want for feathers the more you do the better it looks. To complete the mask pipe dots of black accents as can be seen from the finished cake around the eye and bridge of the nose of the mask. And voila! your done!
