SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO MAKE A CHANGE!

I’m not really good with change and I do understand that it’s necessary to keep up with the times and just to infuse some life into different situations, as the expression goes “Everything Must Change!” SO, we are redoing the Snooky’s website, of course I’m having trepidations but I’m diving head on. I trust you Janie, I trust you.

You can have a look at the progress of the site at the link below, let us know what you think.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

#TheOrangeMan, #SyracuseUniversity's mascot and the mascot of my alma mater, "Go SU!!!
At every game the Orange Man would be there to support the team and get the Home Crowd rowd up! I loved seeing him walk and run through the crowds of people, for Halloween I would love to have a costume like his, not the Orangeman per se, but I would love to be a walking something, like a carton of milk, or a pack of cigarettes with two or three cigarettes popping out of the top. Year after year I imagine myself as something and year after year I fail to make the costume, it takes a lot of work and planning, it'll happen some day, know it! Anyway, the cake above was made for a SU grad's husband who also went to #SyaracuseUniversity. "We are...SU!!! Loved that school, great memories.

My Favorite cake.

I love love love this cake, I think because it's simplistic in design and because I love pigs, if I didn't live in NYC I would have a pig and one of those miniature horses too, you know like the one on the #Amazon commercial where the little guy isn't accepted by the other horses so the owner buys a low entry door for him to come inside to be with her for company. Lol! Back to the cake. Made for little Chloe who we are actually making another cake for this week, it's a two-tiered cake made out of chocolate and covered in fondant.  This week's cake is a Lego's Friends cake and it's a playground scene with the five girls on it. Happy Birthday Choe!

Doctor Who and His Tardis

Don't we all wish we had a #Tardis or some other time travel machine, heck I would transport myself back just three years prior and take a vacation somewhere in Central or South America before Zika existed, Zika is apparently really scary to me. Lands undiscovered and times that I think I would fit into would all be at my access, I'm sure there are some #backtoschool kids who would love to just relive their summer again. This being my second time making a Tardis, the first cake was a #3Dcake, it's an earlier blog post, but the cake above was made to be only two-dimensional. Made out of chocolate cake and filled with a raspberry preserve filling and then frosted with a vanilla buttercream. All of the covering and detail work is done in fondant. Call us to order one 212 665-0990.

Photos of Our Cakes at Snooky's

Sometimes writing something about what we do at Snooky's is the most complicated thing to get done. There are good ideas and not so good ideas about what to post, and sometimes it's getting the right photo shot of a cake that can deter the whole post. I have had on many occasions in trying to get a cake finished by a certain time taken really bad pictures of a cake, also there are times when rushing we forget to get a picture and ask the client to send one but in the 15 plus years I've been doing cakes I've never had a picture sent to me, sorry just one the one below.

Two guys who had their birthday celebrated together and they are both replicated on the cake, a space shuttle. Below is a better picture of the cake.

And clearly we did get a picture of it before it was delivered, but trust me when I say that it rarely happens we get a picture from a client. Not complaining, just sharing.

Happy Summer Everyone!!!

CHANEL

When I think of fashion, I think of #Chanel it's iconic when it comes to #fashionandBeauty. My first love affair as a sophomore in college at #SyracuseUniversity with a lipstick was by Chanel, the brand set the precedent for #lipsticks to come. The #ladieswholunch bring to mind the #Chaneljacket that is oh so recognized, and the quilted handbags make me think of the young ladies who adorn them with gowns, dresses, and even jeans.  The cake above embodies the Chanel brand in that it incorporates the quilting design, pearls, the double c and an elegant shoe on top. I hope one day to be a lady who lunches, and maybe I'll be one who wears one of those beautiful jackets.

Males and Sports!

Boy, when #men and #boys are into #sports they seem to go all the way. Take the cake above, the wife of the birthday boy insisted that all of his favorite sports teams be incorporated into the cake somehow, If she could she would have made separate stadiums for them all so we put #TheRangers, #TheKnicks, and the on banners and plaques, the #TomFord plaque was put in because the birthday boy also loved the clothing line. Good forbid all of the teams have to play on the same day what would that look like? That would never happen but you never know. The cake was made out of chocolate and filled with chocolate and frosted in vanilla buttercream and then covered in fondant.

When A Girl Just Wants To Be A Girl!

Rainbows, hearts, flowers, and puppy tails all the things that most girls love is what this cake incorporated. The colors are a bit washed out in the photo because they were nice and bright (it might be time for a new camera) encompassing blue, pink, purple, green, and yellow. Little Tova was turning five and boy did her eyes light up with joy when she saw her cake and gladly so since it was pouring rain and her party that was to be outdoors now was an indoor party at her home. Happy Birthday Tova!!!

Golden Cupcakes for the Class of 2016 at Columbia University!

May and June are graduation season and as we get more and more orders for graduation themed cakes such as caps, stacks of law books, the adaptation of #Dr.Seuss'sThePlacesYouWillGo, and other graduation theme suggestions, we reflect on what our dreams were when we first entered the work place. I wanted to open a restaurant, and I did which is actually how I got into the cake business, it's was a spin-off from my restaurant which was also called Snooky's located here in NYC in Central Harlem, boy was that a lot of work I literally had no life being an owner and manager of a restaurant. Anyway we push on here and make another graduation cake for a young person starting their life in the workforce but the cupcakes above were easy peezy!

Minny Mouse Cake

#Minnymousecake I loved Minnie Mouse as a kid, as a matter of fact when we went to #Disneyworld I would only take pictures with Minnie and not Mickey Mouse, it's really strange that I remember that, I also remember getting a riffle that shot round cork bullets I think it had something to do with the #SwissRobinsonfamily. Anyway,  I was delighted to make this cake which we made with our golden yellow cake that was then filled and frosted with chocolate buttercream and then covered and decorated with fondant. And by the way we will make #MickeyMouse if you prefer.

Here's To The Blue and White of NYC!

We made a simple police badge cake for an officer who became Sargent, ordered by his girlfriend who I suspiciously believe is an opera singer who was performing the same night of the cake's presentation. Decorated all in #buttercream, the badge was done with a white chocolate which we then painted silver to look like a real #nypdpolicebadge. We do not get many requests at Snooky's Custom Cakes to do cakes made entirely of buttercream so when we get them I make sure to post them.

TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME!

It's baseball time folks! Damien (my client), love that name,  wanted a soft ball theme cake for his daughter's birthday, who also happens to be on a softball league so we made this cake for her. Actually the cake that the client took home looked different in that the ball was yellow with red stitching, when Damien came to pick up the cake he noticed the ball wasn't the right color so we changed it quickly while he waited but I didn't get a picture of it. Another save for team Snooky's!

The Cube Cake with Le Cobusier's The Modulor

Making a cube out of cake has to be one of the most difficult cakes to make. It takes a ruler, a protector, a T square, a compass, and everything else you learned to use in geometry. Oh, you don't remember geometry? Didn't think cake designers used it? Well we do, and other math applications as well! Back to the cake, this is probably the second cube cake I've made the first being a #Rubik'scube, the cake above was a much better attempt in that the sides came out really straight and that's because I used fondant panels to attach the to the cake instead of the standard draping the fondant over the cake method. Made for an architect, The Modulor is the proportioning system developed by Le Corbusier who believed these proportions to be evident in the human body. The purpose of the Modulor was to "maintain the human scale everywhere". The entire building "Unite d'" was based on the Modulor proportioning system. A little bit of art history for the day.

Eloise at The Plaza

#EloiseatthePlazacake, this client actually took two cakes we made in the past and combined them, the figurine on the cake was an addition and if you look through some of my posts you'll see the two teirred cake with the Eloise figurine. The cake was completely edible made with fondant except for Eloise which was done in modeling chocolate, yummy, I kept tasting it, note to self stay out of the modeling chocolate!!!

Deadpool Cake

We were asked to make a #Deadpool cake for the production team of the actual movie, funny but when they ordered it I didn't know what in the heck it was from the picture they provided us with to make it from. Simple in design but so is the mask in the movie, also simple flavors, yellow cake with vanilla buttercream.

iPhone 6 Cake

The above cake was made for a casting agent as a #thankyou from an actress who was booked for the new #iPhone6 as the voice in the commercial, congratulations #Natalie! Rose gold case with a few visible apps were made to replicate the one that's in the new commercial, to make the #rosegold color really stand out the cake was colored a blush pink as well as the buttcream which was our raspberry vanilla lace flavor.

Sometimes You Have To Go Above And Beyond Even If the Number Don't Make sense!

On a normal day at work the phone rang, it was a customer wanting to create a cake for his mom who was arriving from #China, his homeland, to visit him on her birthday, his funds were limited but he wanted a cake that spoke to the characteristics of her. "This is the #YearofthePig in #Chineseastrology which is the year she was born in also she loves photography can you incorporate the two in a cake?" "Sure" I replied and explained that we could put the pig on a round cake and have a small camera besides him or around his neck, the caller loved the idea and ordered the cake and paid for it. But while executing the cake another thought came to mind, why not make a simplified 3D camera that was a silhouette as the cake and put a small pig figure on top as is shown above. So, without conferring with my client this is the way we constructed it, the camera was made all in black and had minimal details, just enough to read camera. When the cake was picked up by the client there was nothing but smiles and and many #thankyous for a job well done. And that's how you go #aboveandbeyond!
