Males and Sports!

Boy, when #men and #boys are into #sports they seem to go all the way. Take the cake above, the wife of the birthday boy insisted that all of his favorite sports teams be incorporated into the cake somehow, If she could she would have made separate stadiums for them all so we put #TheRangers, #TheKnicks, and the on banners and plaques, the #TomFord plaque was put in because the birthday boy also loved the clothing line. Good forbid all of the teams have to play on the same day what would that look like? That would never happen but you never know. The cake was made out of chocolate and filled with chocolate and frosted in vanilla buttercream and then covered in fondant.

The Cube Cake with Le Cobusier's The Modulor

Making a cube out of cake has to be one of the most difficult cakes to make. It takes a ruler, a protector, a T square, a compass, and everything else you learned to use in geometry. Oh, you don't remember geometry? Didn't think cake designers used it? Well we do, and other math applications as well! Back to the cake, this is probably the second cube cake I've made the first being a #Rubik'scube, the cake above was a much better attempt in that the sides came out really straight and that's because I used fondant panels to attach the to the cake instead of the standard draping the fondant over the cake method. Made for an architect, The Modulor is the proportioning system developed by Le Corbusier who believed these proportions to be evident in the human body. The purpose of the Modulor was to "maintain the human scale everywhere". The entire building "Unite d'" was based on the Modulor proportioning system. A little bit of art history for the day.

Making Cakes On The Fly!

We were asked last minute if we could make a shoe cake in 3D for the next day which is near impossible considering it takes about three days for a shoe to set when made out of gumpaste see our website for shoe cake examples, www.Snookysoven.com, but we told the client we could do something less complicated that would still have a 3D element with pop appeal that could be executed in a short amount of time. Above is what we designed for the client. They loved it and told us that the party girl was wearing the same shoe we had designed for the cake that very same day, hummm, all I can do is scratch my head. Job do so we went back to our ordinary (lol ( because a cake designer's day is anything but ordinary)) day of making cakes at Snooky's.
The End!

It's All in the Details!

The customer who ordered this #fallthemedcake sent six different photos of cakes and a long list of things she wanted on the #cake we were creating for her. It's not that she wanted us to reproduce anyone else's cake but she want us to use different elements from each. The phone call were maddening and the emails got very confusing after a while (see initial email below (English is not her first language)), BUT... we somehow pulled it off and the customer commented that it was beautiful! Thank God!

First email
Hi

I would like to give you an idea for how I would like the cake to be for the 27th September 2014.
https://www.facebook.com/Snookysoven?ref=hl
It can be two tier 6” first tier and the second tier 4”. We would like it to be for 20 - 25 people.

I like the fence in the fence cake and everything else from the second fall-cakes.

Just to give you an idea of what I think will look nice and i would prefer to have for the cake is the little fence around the first tier instead of those white pearl look. You could consider one inch of wafer cookies too.

Then inside the fence it would be the same almost as the fall cake photo with the green stripes and off white background and dried leaves, pumpkins, sunflower, creepers all like it is in the fall cake snap.

Second tier creepers going up on the second tier with the dried leaves, pumpkins, sunflowers and the wooden banner kind of look saying EVA AND ARYA. Just add owls too sitting on any tier sitting on the creeper or fence.

On top of the second tier make a small barren tree on the top with an owl sitting on it and two pumpkins under it, next to that pumpkins in a cart overflowing and everywhere around. Or just make two pumpkins under the tree if that takes all the space. You can also have the wooden banner on the top instead of on the second tier just a thought. I would like the tree to be like the tree in the tree photo attached.

Let me know your thoughts and pricing please.

Thanks,
Chandini

This Doesn't Make Sense to Me

Halloween Before the Start of School?

During a shopping excursion at Michaels I discovered Halloween decorations already prominently displayed in the store. Com'on Micheals, REALLY? Kids haven't even gone back to school yet, NYC retailers are really pushing this holiday on us. In the words of Tyga and Bieber "Wait for a minute"!

Anyway, this cake was made for a SoulCycle enthusiast and we thought it was perfect for this time of the year when we are trying to get in shape or take our workout routine to the next level. Made out of fondant and gumpaste which is covering a lemon cake with passion fruit buttercream.

Sculpting a bulldog for a cake

We were asked to make a bulldog out of cake for a small party. As pictured above we made the dog which was sculpted out of cake seated on top of a small cake, it was easier to stabilize him that way, had it been a larger cake we could have put him on all fours, so we seated in him in grass and put a bandanna around his neck which was cute and added a pop of color.

As shown above we started with the head, not seen but used was a piece of styrofoam which was carved and then covered in fondant, making the head out of cake or even just fondant would have been too heavy and would have pulled the head off of the body.

Here we are adding more detail by adding more folds to the skin of the dog's face and by painting the face around the eyes, the bridge of the nose and underneath the mouth to give definition.

So I went a few steps a head, sorry I'm new to showing the process of the making of my cakes and got a head of myself by finishing the cake, but I cropped out the body so you can see the dog's added features. The eyes were painted with a brush in brown and then a thin dark brown line under the eye (like eyeliner) was applied to the lower lid. A pink piece of fondant was added for a tongue and and then a brown piece fondant was attached to the head to represent the color variations of the dog's coat. And lastly ears were placed on either side of the head.

The body was carved out of cake and the color of the top of the head was repeated on the back part of the dog's body and a red bandanna was put around the neck of dog. This was a fun cake to make and took me back to an art sculpture class I took many years ago.

She Wanted Red Bottom Shoes

This cake was made for our client's friend who really wanted a pair of Louboutin shoes and was waiting to be able to purchase a pair (they're expensive). Her friend, no her BFF wanted to make a special cake for her so she choose the theme of the cake and called us on a Monday for that weekend's delivery, normally we needed more time for such an order but she sounded desperate and asked very nicely for us to help her, so we did. Made of red velvet cake and frosted with cream cheese buttercream and then covered with fondant this cake took a little over two days to finish, you see it takes time for the shoe to be constructed and then it has to harden before we can handle it to put the details on it. Just say pretty please and your wish is our command, well sometimes.

Money, money, money, money, money

(Title from the O'jays Love of money)

A half eaten photo cake of the one hundred dollar bill. We made this cake for the New York Historical Society for the celebration of Benjamin Frankin's Birthday, so they ordered a cake with the 100 dollar bill on it which displays Benjamin Franklin. Simple right? Not really, it's hard finding a great image of money to blow up and have a solid image but Snooky's together with The NY Historical Society found one, yeah! And it was enjoyed by all from the email they send regarding it. "Cake was great - delicious and looked great.

Here is a half-eaten shot of it!

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words.

We've made a couple of cakes for this lady pictured who is a powerful PR person located here in NYC, her roster of client's include people such as Martha Stewart to Nicki Minaj and various large corporations. This was her birthday party at Le Cirque restaurant and the order was to affix an edible photo image of her on a sheet cake, so we did. We immediately noticed the animal print blouse she had on and replicated the look in the inscription with the same vibrancy and look but kept the rest of the cake simple with a black line that was piped around the top of the cake, the picture was the focal point and her leopard print blouse set the tone of the cake's decorations and it said a lot about her personality as well, my bet is she is playful, forceful and sexy, what do you think? A picture really is worth a thousand words.

The Making Of A Mask For A Cake

Last week I had a client who wanted a mask as a cake, budget wise making the whole cake into mask wasn't doable but with a little thinking and creativity we made a sheet cake that was adorned with a mask fit for a woman turning 40 hence the inscription "Forty and Fabulous!" So we started with a frosted sheet cake and then started making the crown. Things need for the crown included:

Candy melts

disposable piping bag

Traceable image for the mask.

Yellow and black buttercream
yellow food coloring
gold spay edible paint
a number 2 and 31 piping tips
wax paper
cake board

Instructions:

Melt the candy melts in a bowl on medium heat in a microwave checking in 3 minute intervals for a smooth consistency. Once melted stir in yellow food coloring a little at a time to get a nice bright yellow, spoon the mixture into a piping bag and cut the tip of the bag (not too wide). Place your traceable image on a movable surface i.e. cake board and place a piece of wax paper on top of it. Then with your filled piping bag trace the lines that you see through the wax paper.

Let the image harden completely. Now mix yellow into your buttercream and with another piping bag cut the tip large enough so the the #1 piping tip can nestle in it, fill bag with yellow buttercream.
Once the image has hardened turn it over and place it on your cake board and peel the wax paper off. Now with your piping bag filled with yellow buttercream add lines for details that are in the traceable image.

Once you have achieved your desired detailing set in the refrigerator to harden buttercream for 10 minutes. When done using your stray gold paint spray the mask with even quick stokes and cover evenly then let set to dry about 5 minutes.

Carefully remove the mask from the cake board and place it on your cake (we centered it), then with a pipping bag with the #31 tip filled with black buttercream pipe strokes from the top of the mask spraying outwards to get the desired look you want for feathers the more you do the better it looks. To complete the mask pipe dots of black accents as can be seen from the finished cake around the eye and bridge of the nose of the mask. And voila! your done!
