It's ALL things #Starwars right now. Here at Snooky's we will be busy making #ATATWALKER cakes, #Stormtroppers on cakes, and everything else that's in the new movie. I CAN"T WAIT TO SEE IT!!! I just need to get tickets now and avoid EVERYONE who's seeing it on open day, that means that I have to stay cocooned in my house.

It was the 80's and I was there!

I said a hip hop,
Hippie to the hippie,
The hip, hip a hop, and you don't stop, a rock it
To the bang bang boogie, say, up jump the boogie,
To the rhythm of the boogie, the beat.

I was there! My first boyfriend was a graffiti artist as a matter of fact one of the top artists in the city and to this day is still in the graffiti scene and is considered a legend. Here's to you #skeme! #Pacman was the game of choice, we listened to #cassettetapes on #boomboxes to hear our favorite songs, and boys in the hood who were wore chunky gold chains to accessorize their outfits. Welcome to #HipHop, welcome to the 80's!!!

Boom Box Cake with gold chain and pac man theme on first tier.

Sometimes We Make Cakes that Look Like Food. Really!

We've made a pizza cake, a basket of blueberries and even a turkey shaped cake for Thanksgiving. I'll never really understand why people like cakes that are shaped into food but this week we had the challenge of making a #sushicake. Yes a cake that had sushi piece as seen above. Not bad I'm thinking in comparison to the other food cakes not because the other cakes didn't turn out well, it's just that sushi is pretty to look as a matter of fact it's beautiful! Made with a yellow cake and frosted with chocolate buttercream and then covered with #fondant and hand sculpted sushi pieces.

It's All in the Details!

The customer who ordered this #fallthemedcake sent six different photos of cakes and a long list of things she wanted on the #cake we were creating for her. It's not that she wanted us to reproduce anyone else's cake but she want us to use different elements from each. The phone call were maddening and the emails got very confusing after a while (see initial email below (English is not her first language)), BUT... we somehow pulled it off and the customer commented that it was beautiful! Thank God!

First email
Hi

I would like to give you an idea for how I would like the cake to be for the 27th September 2014.
https://www.facebook.com/Snookysoven?ref=hl
It can be two tier 6” first tier and the second tier 4”. We would like it to be for 20 - 25 people.

I like the fence in the fence cake and everything else from the second fall-cakes.

Just to give you an idea of what I think will look nice and i would prefer to have for the cake is the little fence around the first tier instead of those white pearl look. You could consider one inch of wafer cookies too.

Then inside the fence it would be the same almost as the fall cake photo with the green stripes and off white background and dried leaves, pumpkins, sunflower, creepers all like it is in the fall cake snap.

Second tier creepers going up on the second tier with the dried leaves, pumpkins, sunflowers and the wooden banner kind of look saying EVA AND ARYA. Just add owls too sitting on any tier sitting on the creeper or fence.

On top of the second tier make a small barren tree on the top with an owl sitting on it and two pumpkins under it, next to that pumpkins in a cart overflowing and everywhere around. Or just make two pumpkins under the tree if that takes all the space. You can also have the wooden banner on the top instead of on the second tier just a thought. I would like the tree to be like the tree in the tree photo attached.

Let me know your thoughts and pricing please.

Thanks,
Chandini

A Cake Fit for a Princess!

The princess cake, adorned with edible jewels in the crown and topped with the princess' age (she turned five). We added a draping piece of fondant on the bottom tier and then affixed bows on the draped gatherings. This cake turned out to be three tiers of fanciful delight and little Adriana screamed with laughter  when it was presented to her.

This Little Piggy

This little piggy was created for a little girl who loves piglets. I being a pig lover myself and let me just say I am all things pigs for example I have a crystal pig that sits on my self, napkin rings made out of pewter that I had to have and bought directly from a restaurant I was dining at in Virginia, a stuffed piggy which I have had since my college years and refuse to throw away, and the list goes on. Needless to say I had a lot of fun making it this cake, it's simple in design but depicts the animal nicely and in a cute way and was a nice break from some other the other cakes that had crazy over the top details.

Ushering in Warm Weather (Because we really really need it!)

Sprinkles always remind me of warm weather, Mr. Softee ice cream trucks with their familiar music that has lasted for decades having patrons lined up in front the ordering window and others walking away with their sweet twisted custard cone with multi-colored sprinkles. The memory conjures summer and Americana or at least warm weather I'm not really sure if Mr. Softee was around during the Americana period. Anyway, this cake was ordered for a wedding ceremony for a couple who loved sprinkles and who was to have a wedding to follow in the near future in Israel. We added a soft shimmering ribbon and ties a bow on each tier making it a beautiful simple cake that brought smiles to everyone. Summer we're waiting for you here in New York City we need you badly to erase all the snow storms of the season.

A Rescued Valentine's Day

She arrived with roses in her arms when she came to pick up her kitty cake that we made for her that evening. Alison Valentine was a singer who ordered a cake to be make in a 2D shape of her logo, a white kitten. "Are those flowers for me?" I asked, she replied "Yes, do you want some?" I smiled and presented her cake to her. "I love it!" She said while blushing and then proceeded to pick through the large bundle of roses. "This is for you." Thank you!" I said excitedly as I extended my hand to accept the rose. "My boyfriend and I just broke up, this is perfect, you made my night" "OMG" She exclaimed. "You have to come to my performance tonight you might meet your Valentine there, please come." I smiled and thanked her for the invitation but declined, it was a cold snowy day and I didn't feel like coming out. "You really should, I'd love to see you there. Anyway, I'll put your name on the list to get in in case you change your mind." And with a few key strokes on her iphone I was confirmed and she left. Thirty minutes later I had changed my mind, and I accompanied with my brother and his girlfriend later that evening headed for Soho to the Maison O where Alison was performing.

I am so glad I did go out because I had a blast and danced all night long. I took this picture with Alison in her red dress just before her performance.

Thank you Alison for a wonder Valentine's Day glad you convinced me to come out!

Xoxo - Dana

Transforming a Logo into Cake

This client wanted their logo made into a cake for their Christmas party, to the right is the actual picture of the company's logo. This cake comprised of making jewels for the crown of the cake along with coins and a chain that ran along the brim and up the front of the crown. We used buttercream for some of the details of the cake but the majority is made in fondant. Logo are really fun to do especially when it's an actual thing as opposed to just fonts.

She Wanted Red Bottom Shoes

This cake was made for our client's friend who really wanted a pair of Louboutin shoes and was waiting to be able to purchase a pair (they're expensive). Her friend, no her BFF wanted to make a special cake for her so she choose the theme of the cake and called us on a Monday for that weekend's delivery, normally we needed more time for such an order but she sounded desperate and asked very nicely for us to help her, so we did. Made of red velvet cake and frosted with cream cheese buttercream and then covered with fondant this cake took a little over two days to finish, you see it takes time for the shoe to be constructed and then it has to harden before we can handle it to put the details on it. Just say pretty please and your wish is our command, well sometimes.

Money, money, money, money, money

(Title from the O'jays Love of money)

A half eaten photo cake of the one hundred dollar bill. We made this cake for the New York Historical Society for the celebration of Benjamin Frankin's Birthday, so they ordered a cake with the 100 dollar bill on it which displays Benjamin Franklin. Simple right? Not really, it's hard finding a great image of money to blow up and have a solid image but Snooky's together with The NY Historical Society found one, yeah! And it was enjoyed by all from the email they send regarding it. "Cake was great - delicious and looked great.

Here is a half-eaten shot of it!

The Making Of A Mask For A Cake

Last week I had a client who wanted a mask as a cake, budget wise making the whole cake into mask wasn't doable but with a little thinking and creativity we made a sheet cake that was adorned with a mask fit for a woman turning 40 hence the inscription "Forty and Fabulous!" So we started with a frosted sheet cake and then started making the crown. Things need for the crown included:

Candy melts

disposable piping bag

Traceable image for the mask.

Yellow and black buttercream
yellow food coloring
gold spay edible paint
a number 2 and 31 piping tips
wax paper
cake board

Instructions:

Melt the candy melts in a bowl on medium heat in a microwave checking in 3 minute intervals for a smooth consistency. Once melted stir in yellow food coloring a little at a time to get a nice bright yellow, spoon the mixture into a piping bag and cut the tip of the bag (not too wide). Place your traceable image on a movable surface i.e. cake board and place a piece of wax paper on top of it. Then with your filled piping bag trace the lines that you see through the wax paper.

Let the image harden completely. Now mix yellow into your buttercream and with another piping bag cut the tip large enough so the the #1 piping tip can nestle in it, fill bag with yellow buttercream.
Once the image has hardened turn it over and place it on your cake board and peel the wax paper off. Now with your piping bag filled with yellow buttercream add lines for details that are in the traceable image.

Once you have achieved your desired detailing set in the refrigerator to harden buttercream for 10 minutes. When done using your stray gold paint spray the mask with even quick stokes and cover evenly then let set to dry about 5 minutes.

Carefully remove the mask from the cake board and place it on your cake (we centered it), then with a pipping bag with the #31 tip filled with black buttercream pipe strokes from the top of the mask spraying outwards to get the desired look you want for feathers the more you do the better it looks. To complete the mask pipe dots of black accents as can be seen from the finished cake around the eye and bridge of the nose of the mask. And voila! your done!
